RISPA'S STRATEGIC GOALS & OBJECTIVES


1. Social Injustice

Ensure that ALL Rhode Island children and youth are valued and that their rights and opportunities are protected in our schools and communities.


1A: Improve RI school psychologists’ knowledge regarding non discriminatory practices and the underlying causes of social justice inequities.
1B: Expand RI school psychologists’ skills in promoting equity and implementing non-discriminatory practices.
1C: Enhance the ability of RI school psychologists to be effective advocates at state and local levels.

2: Workforce Development

A high-quality and diverse school psychology workforce is available in Rhode Island to meet the increasing demand for school psychological services


2A: Increase access to graduate preparation programs (i.e., faculty and students) that align with NASP standards
2B: Expand RI school psychologists’ skills in promoting equity and implementing non-discriminatory practices.
2C: Enhance the ability of RI school psychologists to be effective advocates at state and local levels.
2D: Enhance advocacy efforts to external stakeholders about the role and value of school psychologists.
2E: Enhance the availability of empirical data to understand and respond to workforce shortages.

3: Leadership Development

​​Rhode Island school psychologists possess the leadership skills to effect change at the local, state, and national levels.

3A: Improve the state associations’ capacity to recruit, develop, and maintain diverse leaders who sustain their associations and advance the profession.
3B: Increase diversity of leadership at all levels (e.g., cultural, linguistic, professional role, years of experience).
3C: Enhance school psychologists’ ability to be leaders and advocates for effective practices to improve student learning, behavior, and mental health.

4: NASP Practice Model

The Rhode Island Department of Education (RIDE), and ALL Rhode Island local education agencies (RI-LEAs) and school psychologists implement the NASP Model for Comprehensive and Integrated School Psychological Services (NASP Practice Model).

4A: Increase the explicit reference to the NASP Practice Model in RI school districts, RI state policies and procedures and professional development opportunities (e.g., definition of scope of practice, recognition of the practice model components in personnel evaluation).
4B: Improve the offerings at state conferences and other professional development opportunities to reflect the broad domains of the NASP Practice Model.
4C: Increase the number of RI school psychologists who perform an expanded role in the schools.
4D: Increase the number of exemplar school districts in Rhode Island so that multiple sites are identified in each state.

5: Behavioral/Mental Health Providers

All RI school psychologists provide culturally competent and comprehensive mental and behavioral health (MBH) services. 

5A: Increase innovative, coordinated opportunities for RI school psychologists to establish competence in direct MBH services.
5B: Increase the number of RI school psychologists who attend and participate in professional development training opportunities about MBH services.
5C: Increase consultation and technical support to districts and other state and community organizations regarding comprehensive MBH services.
5D: Advance federal, state, and local policies that recognize school psychologists as qualified provides of MBH services.
